Musical Production and Engineering Portfolio

Project 1: Radio8Ball - Sound Engineer

Working as the mixing engineer for Radio8Ball I have so far mixed and mastered roughly 500 episodes, each of which includes a live musical performance. I chose to include this particular artist for my portfolio because it was one of my most challenging-and most exciting-projects to date.

I mixed and mastered all of the audio from this 6 hour recording session with Grammy winners Opium Moon. This session was particularly interesting because not only were some of the songs 8-10 minutes long with multiple movements, but also the instrumentation included unusual instruments like the santoor (Persian hammered dulcimer).

Using Logic Pro as my DAW, I carved space for the violin solos to ebb and flow in and out of the spotlight, and routed a hefty chain of plugins to the reverb bus to create the warmth that Lili Haydn demanded for her signature sound.

Project 2: Got Geeked Album - Producer and Performer

Produced at the Ruby Room studio by Elan Wright and myself.

This was my first experience working in studio with a producer of Elan’s magnitude (credits: Macklemore, Travis Thompson, Sol). Working in Logic Pro, we created 13 songs using a combination of samples, midi instruments, and live recordings in the studio. In particular, I had the heaviest hand in producing the tracks “Bad Guy”, “Tha Geeks”, “All the Same”, and the bonus track, “Why We Get High”- which I actually recorded and produced in the jazz ensemble practice space at my college.

Project 3: The Early Bus EP - Producer, Performer, and Engineer

Produced between Ruby Room Studio, my home studio, JAGA’s home studio, and the home studio at the house of Marshall Law Band guitarist and engineer Josh Richins.

This collaborative effort had me handling the bulk of production between layering samples, playing guitar, and using midi tracks. Elan Wright provided additional production to the tracks “Higher”, “Dreamin’”, and “Trippin’”. All of my vocals were recorded by Elan at Ruby Room with the exception of “The Beat Goes On”. JAGA recorded his vocals at his home studio for “Dreamin’”. The mixing was primarily handled by Elan with assistance from me.

“The Beat Goes On” is the most complex production of the record, being jointly produced by myself and Josh Richins, with instrumentation and vocals from the members of the Marshall Law Band. I started the song with the sample of Soulful Strut by Young-Holt Limited, adding my own tweaks and twists. We then reimagined the loops with live instrumentation from saxophone, piano, drums, guitar, and bass. My vocals and Marshall Hugh’s vocals were recorded by Josh Richins, and Josh handled the mixing for this song.

All of the mastering was done by Matthew Wolk.

Project 4: Rasheed Smiley - Mixing Engineer

The first of many songs I have worked on with Rasheed to be released. “Cakes” is a contemporary RnB croon from this multi-faceted artist. This song was recorded at Fibonacci Studios in Seattle and mixed by me in my home studio. Known for his signature complex productions, this mix contains over 70 active tracks with instruments and vocals layered to create an ever-changing soundscape for the listener.

Project 5: Big Girl Job - Producer, Recording Engineer, Mixing Engineer

Produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered in my home studio. “Loup-garou” is a haunting and soulful performance by singer-songwriter Cami, who performs under the name Big Girl Job. I engineered the recording of Cami’s guitar and vocals, and played bass on this record. I mixed and mastered this record in my home studio using Logic Pro.
